What the Body of Knowledge Is Not

It is not a textbook, a mandatory training course or a promise that one learning route fits every professional. It defines the destination and the evidence expected. Candidates remain free to develop competence through suitable routes.

Governance and Review

The Body of Knowledge is owned by the Standards and Qualifications Committee and approved by the Board of CISCM.

The Second Edition is scheduled for full review in 2029, with interim technical amendment available where material change or correction requires it. Amendments should carry an effective date and should not be applied retrospectively to candidates already assessed.

Open Use

Employers, members, candidates and recognized providers may cite and map against the Body of Knowledge with attribution. It may not be reproduced as the basis of a competing credential.

Supply chain problems do not remain inside departmental boundaries. A service promise changes inventory; a sourcing term changes cash; a data weakness becomes a compliance failure; a network optimization removes resilience. The Four Currents model gives professionals a disciplined way to examine these connections.

The Material Current

What flows: Physical goods, capacity and the assets that make, move and store them.

Professional question: Can we make it, move it, store it and deliver it reliably, at the required cost and promised time?

The Money Current

What flows: Cost, price, working capital, value and financial exposure.

What flows: Demand signals, plans, master data, systems and analytical capability.

Five levels that distinguish knowing from doing—and doing from designing

The CISCM proficiency scale is cumulative. Each level assumes command of the levels below it.

Aware
Understands concepts, terminology and purpose; recognizes when specialist support is required.
02
Applied
Executes established procedures correctly under normal conditions and produces reliable output with defined methods.
03
Analytical
Diagnoses problems, selects methods, interprets ambiguity and explains a recommendation.
04
Architectural
Designs systems, processes or policies and defends trade-offs across cost, service, risk and stakeholders.
05
Authoritative
Sets direction under genuine uncertainty, establishes practice others follow and carries enterprise accountability.

The Scarce Step: Analytical to Architectural

Level 3 — Analytical

Solves the problem as presented.

Level 4 — Architectural

First tests whether the stated problem is the real problem, then designs the system that should exist and defends that design against competing objectives.

This is the governing standard for the Chartered tier because it reflects cross-functional system ownership rather than technical analysis alone.

Cross-Cutting Threads

Six capabilities are assessed inside every domain:

Ethical Judgement

Recognize the ethical dimension of apparently technical decisions and act appropriately when commercial pressure and professional responsibility diverge.

Data and Digital Fluency

Interrogate what data measures, whether it is reliable and whether an analytical output can support the conclusion claimed.

Risk Awareness

Ask what happens if a design, dependency or assumption fails—during the decision, not only during a periodic risk review.

Sustainability Reasoning

Integrate environmental and social consequences into ordinary sourcing, logistics, planning, design and supplier decisions.

Global and Cultural Competence

Work across legal systems, cultures, languages and commercial expectations without assuming one market's norms are universal.

Commercial and Financial Reasoning

Express operational proposals in the cost, cash-flow, risk and capital-allocation terms through which organizations make decisions.
